Admit it, pushing the age barrier to lay credence to this Gen X battle cry of “40 being the new 30” and “50 being the new 40” requires more than meets the eye. Well, others have the good fortune of just sitting on their but and still look young and fresh as they approach middle age and glide through it gracefully– credit due to their genes. The majority of the unfortunate ones (me included), however, do not have this enamored existence.
Again I have to admit for the sake of my sanity that I do not look young for my age, in fact the opposite. I have had been through several destructive lifestyle cycles and their cumulative effects are slowly creeping up on every pores of my skin upon stepping on my 4th decade of existence. Good thing modern mobile phone selfie apps give us the impression of looking young. But I will accept looking old to feeling old anytime of the day.
Yes, I have digressed in this department. Lately, I have adopted a more sedentary lifestyle after I quit my 8 to 5 job to become a freelance make-up artist. This means that I only go out when I have appointments and head straight home right after. In short, I have a very boring life, ha-ha! I thought that this set up will afford me more time to indulge in physical activities like running (I have been an avid runner since 2010!), but my body seemed not so inclined to do so anymore. That’s why I need all the help to spring me back into sweating it out once again!
Luckily, two natural health supplements happen to land on my lap these past few days. One of them is Nutrilite Double X and the other one is Organique Acai Berry Premium Blend. Let me share to you here about the vitamineral + phytonutrient contents and my general impression of the former.
Taking out Nutrilite Double X from the box, it is a green semi-transparent pencil-case looking plastic container with three compartments inside. Each compartment contains a gold, silver and bronze pressure-sealed foil packages containing 62 tablets each good for 1 month’s use of twice a day dosage.
Vitamins, Minerals and Phytonutrients
The vitamins are contained in the gold foil. The tablets are yellowish in color and rhomboid in shape. Here are the listed vitamins per tablet: A, Ascorbic Acid, B12, Beta-Carotene, Biotin, D3, d-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acid Succinate, Folic Acid, Niacinamide, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, and Thiamine Mononitrate.
The minerals are in the silver foil container in whitish oblongated tablets containing Calcium Carbonate, Chromium Chloride, Copper Gluconate, Magnesium Oxide, Manganese Sulfate, Molybdenum Yeast, Potassium Iodide, Sodium Selenite, and Zinc Oxide.

These are the phytonutrients present per tablet: Acerola Concentrate, Alfalfa Concentrate, Apple Extract Powder, Asparagus Powder, Broccoli Dehydrate, Citrus Bioflavonoid Dehydrate, Grape Extract, Kale, Lutein Ester, Lycopene, Oregano Extract, Pomegranate Extract, Prune Extract, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, and Wild Blueberry Powder.
Health, Wellness and Beauty in Every Tablet
The Vital Vitamins
Despite the very scientific names listed in the vitamins components list, all of these can be summarized into 5 letter vitamins – A, B Group, C, D and E. Specificity in listing of the type, variant or sources of a vitamin source is for users to know that it is the best, natural, most potent, less prone to degradation variant and therefore, with almost none or much less side effects to the body or contra-indications to other drugs that is used per type of vitamin. Example is Beta Carotene for Vitamin A source, D3 instead of D2 for Vitamin D, d-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acid Succinate for Vitamin E, and so on.
Why are there so much B Vitamins in Nutrilite Double X? Well, why not? First and foremost is the energy boost this group gives us through their function in fat and protein metabolism. Not only in providing us energy, this function also sees to it that the production and repair of the cells in our body like red blood cells is maintained leading to a number of benefits to our vital organs like the heart, brain, nervous, circulatory systems, and even the skin. The skin! This brings us to this “other” benefit that is the deal breaker to vitamin takers like me – the beauty benefits!
Of the 8 types of B vitamins, 7 are listed here as follows:
- Thiamine Mononitrate or Vitamin B1 – important for cell growth, heart health, energy metabolism and fat metabolism which translate to more energy, healthy heart and brain.
- Riboflavin or Vitamin B2 – Like B1 it is also involved in energy metabolism. Plays a role in iron mobilization and thus the production of red blood cells. Again another energy boost vitamin.
- Niacinamide or Vitamin B3 – This can be referred to as a heart, brain, gut and skin vitamin due to its possible role in abating memory loss, improving circulation, relieving diarrhea and giving the skin suppleness.
- Pyridoxine Hydrochloride or Vitamin B6 – Like Vitamins B1 and B2, Vitamin B6 plays a role in metabolism of fats and proteins, energy metabolism, and like Vitamin B2, plays a role in red blood cells production.
- Biotin or Vitamin B7 – This is another beauty and energy B vitamin as it plays a role in converting food nutrients into energy and maintaining the health of the skin and hair.
- Folic Acid or Vitamin B9 – Okey this is more than just a vitamin for pregnant women, as Folic Acid is significant in cell health, red blood cell production, brain and heart health.
- Cobalamin or Vitamin B12 – This is another brain, nerve and red blood cells vitamin like the other B vitamins.
Wow that is a handful B Vitamins in one capsule but we see the reason why they are so important.
Beta Carotene, the precursor of Vitamin A – Think carrots! Instead of the synthetic for of this vitamin, it is the beta carotene precursor that is used. The reason? Vitamin A is toxic in excess while beta carotene is not. The body just converts enough beta carotene to Vitamin A that it needs. Therefore, with beta carotene supplementation, we get both the anti-oxidant benefit it gives as a carotenoid and the Vit A benefits of good eye sight, improved immune system and healthy skin.
Ascorbic Acid or Vitamin C – A beauty and wellness vitamin good for the skin, teeth, bone, blood vessels and known as an antioxidant. Okey it is anti-aging! So count it in.
Cholecalciferol or Vitamin D3 – the form of Vitamin D made by our body naturally when the skin is exposed to the sun and therefore the best form to take as a supplement as compared to the D2 variant which is the form found in food sources. This vitamin is good not only for over-all health including bone health and weight loss but also for mental health as it is found to ease depression. I totally need this! Ha-ha.
d-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acid Succinate or Vitamin E – the best, most potent and less susceptible to degradation natural form of Vitamin E. This wonder vitamin posts a lot of promise in preventing the aging of almost all organs of the body (the brain and nerves, the heart and blood vessels, the lungs, etc. including the eyes and the skin) making it a good beauty and health vitamin, a potion for eternal youth!
A Minefield of Minerals
Minerals are important in maintaining and protecting the normal chemical and organic processes in our body, production of enzymes and anti-oxidants, functions of vital organs, thyroid glands, and systems of the body (circulatory, nervous, immune), keeping our muscles, skin, teeth and bones healthy, and our body free from infection, even against cancer. However, a number of them also interact with other prescription or non-prescription medications, herbal or dietary supplements, and medical conditions like heart, kidney, and stomach problems that a doctor’s advice is necessary before taking them.
Here are some of them as contained in the white tablet and their effects to the body in a nutshell:
- Calcium carbonate – healthy bones and teeth
- Chromium – helps in metabolism of protein and fats, sugar management and healing process
- Copper gluconate – helps maintain healthy testosterone levels, production of white and red blood cells and maintains bone density
- Magnesium oxide – important for the normal functioning of the systems of the body, maintaining healthy muscles and bones, and even relieving anxiety
- Molybdenum yeast – the “natural” source of molybdenum and thus the most easily assimilated form. Molybdenum is important in the production of molybdoenzymes important in the chemical process of the body.
- Sodium selenite – boosts the immune system and found to have cancer-fighting potential
Phytonutrients – Antioxidant and Anti-carcinogen Power
Phyton or phuton is the Greek word meaning plant. Therefore, phytonutrients simply are nutrients derived from plants or vegetables. As they say in the world of nutrition, the greener and more colorful the fruits and vegetables that we eat, the healthier they are. These colorful substances found in plants are called phytochemicals and they protect the plants from the ravages of the environment that they live in. In short, these are their natural protection against the harmful environment like pesticides, heat radiation and insect attacks. They also give plants their distinct colors. Therefore, the more colorful they are means the more phytochemicals or nutrients they contain.
The human body can likewise benefit from these phytochemicals. Most of these nutrients have the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Both have shown promising results in preventing and fighting the formation of carcinogens and disease producing free radicals in the body they are hailed as the modern day fountain of youth. They play significant roles in the repair of damaged cells due to sickness, age-related degeneration, toxins from food and pollution, and unhealthy lifestyle. In short, phytonutrients have the cancer-fighting and disease-preventing abilities that our body needs.
Of course we know that fruits and vegetables are good for our body. We knew that since we were young and now that we are older, and supposedly wiser, we tell that to our children! But do we really consume enough of these given our penchant for fast foods, greasy meats, salty junk foods, sweet desserts, and a sundry of so-called modern comfort foods rich in preservatives and man-made chemicals? I don’t think so. We can barely even squeeze in a banana after each meal!
Basically, the third tablet contains plant and fruit extracts like Acerola Concentrate, Alfalfa Concentrate, Apple Extract Powder, Asparagus Powder, Broccoli Dehydrate, Grape Extract, Kale, Oregano Extract, Pomegranate Extract, Prune Extract, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, and Wild Blueberry Powder. All of these have their own set of phytochemicals with compounded benefits to the body.
Add to these extracts are potent carotenoid concentrates like lutein esther and lycopene, responsible for the bright red, yellow and orange pigmentation in fruits and vegetables. Carotenoids are strong antioxidants that help prevent cancer and keep our heart healthy.
Lignans mimic the effect of estrogen and therefore good for easing menopausal symptoms and helping in the prevention of endometrial and ovarian cancers. They are also called phytoestrogens. Kale and broccoli dehydrate make sure each brown tablet has enough of these.
The Acerola and the Alfalfa are nutrient and vita-mineral rich plant sources they are touted to be health, wellness, and longevity “miracle” plants. Among the health benefits associated with them are management of diabetes, cancer prevention, anti-aging, immunity booster, heart health, and metabolism improvement, among others. Wow that’s a mouthful I need to plant these asap!
More on phytonutrients here.
Oh my, after 2K words, I am done! There is simply so much stuff packed inside each tablet that it took as many words to scrutinize most of them and what they contribute to health, wellness and beauty that I think are what you pay for these three tablets taken twice daily.
The retail price for Nutrilite Double X as stated in their Philippine website is Php 6,495.00 good for one month of taking this “all-in-one dietary food supplement to contain 12 essential vitamins, 9 essential minerals, and 19 phytonutrient-rich plant concentrates from the five different colors of fruits and vegetables, bringing you optimal health, naturally.” This is marketed as a ‘premium supplement’, well of course, the price say so! After scrutinizing each ingredient though, indeed Nutrilite made sure to use only the natural, most potent, most concentrated, with less contraindication and harmful effect to the body ingredients for each vitamin, mineral and phytonutrient supplement present in each tablet.
I have barely used this product for five days and I already have the concentration to research and write this lengthy an article (and to think that I am already dreading the tell-tale symptoms of forgetfulness and mental dullness at just my mid 40s age)! For this alone, personally, the price tag is very much worth it!
