The field of Ayala Alabang Country Club covers an expansive space of real estate yet everywhere I set my gaze on, I see young kids, teenagers and young adults running, kicking, and scrambling after multicolored soccer balls. Alaska Football Cup managed for the 20th year to gather 410 teams and 6,150 football players from all over the country. From as near as those belonging to the Metro Manila school teams and soccer clubs, to as far as Palawan, futbolistas invade the field to assert supremacy over other teams and come out as champions in their categories.

Two decades of dedication to forming, developing, and discovering soccer superstars has made Alaska Football Cup the leading grassroots development program for soccer in the country. This has produced local stalwarts in our flag carrier team who have been bannering and slowly uplifting our country to among the best in the region.

Exposing the kids at such a young age to sports development program such as Alaska Football Cup makes them grow up with the “winning form” necessary to compete among the best not only in the sport but also in life. They learn other values like determination, discipline, hard work, teamwork, and sportsmanship that the sport development process instills in their young minds. For me, this is far more valuable than football skills per se, as this makes them become competitive and responsible adults. This, I believe, is Alaska’s legacy – ensuring a brighter future for our country through developing the youth. NUTRITION. ACTION. CHAMPION.  Nuff said!

A total of 29 football fields were necessary in order to accommodate 800 seven-a-side games throughout the 3-day, November 28 – 30, soccer festivity. Participants as young as six years old flew in from various provinces like Masbate, Baguio, Negros Occidental, Cebu, Davao, Palawan, Legaspi, Laguna, Batangas, Bukidnon, Zambales, Pampanga, Tarlac, Ilocos, Bicol, Romblon, Davao Sur, Compostela Valley, Quezon, Cavite, Albay, Pangasinan, Bacolod, Iloilo, Mindoro and Metro Manila just to take part in the longest running and most successful football program in the country.

“This marks another monumental event for Alaska. We have 410 teams and a total of 6,150 football players together in one venue, all united by their love for football,” shares Wilfred Uytengsu, President and CEO of Alaska Milk Corporation. “It is of great pride to witness how the Alaska Sports Program has engaged young athletes into this kind of culture, and how they live by the values inherent in sports,” he further adds.

I have personally witnessed a couple of times this dynamic interaction among the players, their coaches, their support crew composed of club members, assistants and soccer moms and dads together with the rest of the family who came out in full support. This has evolved into a family activity showcasing how the program has likewise strengthened the family bond.

This is one genuine proof that indeed football provides an active alternative for children in place of passive activities such as watching television, surfing the internet, or spending too much time on social media. The National Nutrition Survey of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI) reported that health issues are best addressed by adopting an active lifestyle along with healthy diet, and regular drinking of milk, at least twice daily.

The benefits of joining Alaska Football Cup program is simply overpowering to be ignored by parents whose main goal is nothing but the betterment of their children. You want either health and good character for your kids, or death by sitting for the whole day in front of the computer. That simple! As their guardian, the choice is no one else but yours to make.
