National Geographic Earth Run just happens to be the only run I can muster a 42K performance. Why so? It has to do with the date of the race I believe so being on the first summer month of April. Leading to this month are several 21K races held in a cool but non-rainy local weather conditions much suitable to my “delicate” body. Thus a continued training season unhampered by sickness that can easily put me back to square one in an instant.
This year’s edition, as in the previous five, is going to be dedicated to a particular environmental concern. We grew up knowing about the Tamaraw, the smaller version of the Carabao, being endemic to Mindoro Province but whose population has always been on the decline, to extinct levels in fact. To help turn around this sad eventuality and double their population by 2020, World Wide Fund Philippines will help in making out developments in the Tawbuid Mangyan community, the area where the Tamaraws co-exist, through a solar powered lighting system. This project will enable the community to see not only light, but a heightened environmental consciousness as well. This transcends to better education, information dissemination and eventually, relationship with nature, including the taking care of the endemic bulls.
