Inspiration of Immortality

It was last Tuesday when I got to meet immortality on the face, or at least a specter of it. I was filled with awe and I felt worthless but not uninspired. The Philippine Team for the 18th Asia Masters Athletics Championship this September 19, 2014 sporting event at KitaKami City, Japan had a sendoff media party at the 100 Miles Café, Fort Strip, BGC sponsored by LTime Studio and SOMA Sports Watch. It was during this event when I learned that an advancing age is never a hindrance to a competitive spirit. The one that I am found wanting.

Graced by no less than PATAFA President Philip Ella Juico and hosted by Running Host Sir Bhoy Ramos, the event started with the introductory speech of Edward Kho, himself a participant in the 4oo M sprint, 4×400 and 4×100 relay runs, and the inspirational message from no less than Asia’s Javelin Queen prexy Erlinda Lavindia. By the way, Manang Linda had been at her sport as long as I lived in this world, which is some good 4 decades and some!

Among this tough and timeless group are some familiar faces in the local running scene, there is Team Soleus member and Corregidor Marathon 2013 Queen Lorna Vejano, a long distance runner who in this international competition will try her prowess in shorter distance races 5000M and 1500M. Beauteous and brawny attorney Victorina “Inang” Calma will try her luck in the 800M, 1500M and 4x100M relay. Susan Ealdama and Salve Bayaban will both dabble in 100M Sprint and 4x100MR events while Ma. Jeanette Obiena will try her luck in the 80M hurdles.

Track Superstars Elma Muros and Elenita Punelas will likewise lend their supremacy and mastery of their specialty track and field events joining in the 100M, 4x100MR and Long Jump. The previous bunch had been a bumper crop earning 8 gold, 7 silver and 5 bronze medals under the spearhead of Elma and Manang Linda, a Track and Field Legend. This year, they promise to surpass that performance with the latter joining in all throw events, discuss, hammer, shot put, aside from her staple, javelin throw.

On the male side, not to be outdone of course, with the presence of Danilo Fresnido, John Lozada, Edward and Emerson Obiena and Edward Kho, no less. Dennis Scott will banner the 65-69 age group by joining in a handful of events – 2000M Steeplechase, 1500M, and 300M Hurdles while Reynato Unso will try to shine in the 55-57 age group. Margarito Baniqued, Julio Bayaban, Antonio Chee Jr., and Mario De Santos will complete this competitive line up.
