I love running and it is because of running that I took to my new love, biking, with ease. The cardiovascular conditioning I gained through it became my base for this smooth transition. I came to realize that many runners are doing the same. The running revolution in our country is translating to biking revolution.
The major thing that limits run to bike transitioning is the bike cost. However, an expensive bike is not necessary. Moreover, with an increasing number of enthusiasts, that too will become relatively affordable. For Cheapanggang Diva, a cheap, non-top-of-the-line roadie will do. All upgrading will occur nowhere else where money is needed, but within me.
Together with Spectrum Worldwide, the franchise owner of Cycle Asia, the Bonifacio Global City as represented by the Fort Bonifacio Development Corporation (FBDC) and Sunrise Events of triathlete and business magnate Wilfred Steven Uytengsu, Jr., will be bringing to the country the bike event that has been doing rave rounds of several Southeast Asian countries like Malaysia and Singapore – BGC Cycle Philippines.
Both entities have been at the forefront in supporting the local running community as a whole. They have been hosting and bringing running events of international standard to the country, respectively. This time around they will do to biking what they did to running.
Last Thursday July 25, Seda Hotel at Bonifacio High Street hosted the press launch. This was well attended by the media community including the running bloggers, I included, and major personalities and groups in the bike community like the former Comelec Commissioner Gregorio Larrazabal. The Firefly Brigade group with its head, Katti Sta. Ana, is also present being the beneficiary of this event. My very first bike tour experience happened at last year’s Tour of the Fireflies. It was a nerve wracking one riding the peloton of more than 15,000 bikers for the first time evaaah! Talk about a severe case of pelotonophobia!

I would rate this race an 8.5 in my Cheapangga Meter scale with 10 being the most fabulous of all in the league of Cobra Ironman 70.3 Phils. in terms of how I perceive the event will be executed and the participants it will appeal to.
Lately, I have been watching many international cycling tours and I cannot help but compare the magnitude of team participation and the local support to our local version like the LBC Ronda Pilipinas and the Tour of Matabungkay. These may be professional events but the brand sponsorship will come because of the local enthusiasts support and growing interest among the rest.
With the holding of events like BGC Cycle Phils. , which is accessible to most leisure and age group bikers, it will provide a needed boost to the local bike community as everyday people will get to be exposed to such international caliber events. Then sponsors will become more aggressive with this ever growing biking consciousness and local patronage.
Therefore, runners who love to bike and hardcore bikers brace yourselves for the revolutionary ride which our country will experience in the years to come. With major players putting in their resources and skills into these kinds of events, we will not be far into becoming the cycling powerhouse in Asia.
Runners, get ready to get used to measuring speed by km/h in addition to min./km!
