A very unique “fun” run where Filipino-themed interactive obstacles placed along the route provide stations of picture perfect fun with family and friends as well as challenges to those looking for something different.  Tinikling and Chinese garter along the route just to mention a few, anyone?  This sure will pique the fancy of Pinoy runners looking for more out of running.  It is indeed more fun running in the Philippines!

My Thoughts

It has been an observation of almost many who has earned their mileage through sweat and tears that the present running scene has leveled up.  An example is the recently concluded Run United 1 where the bulk of the participants made up the 21K category (5,000 out of a total of 12,000 runners).  Accompanying this so-called “upgrade” is the increase in the number of more serious runners aiming for PRs in every race after training with unwavering intensity.  Almost instantaneously, a great majority if not all of the races cater to this emerging trend.  It is a norm nowadays to find races with themes that center around competition rather than fun.  Newbie runners and those contemplating on starting a path to healthy living through running seemed left out.  Being a newbie once, I can commiserate with their predicament.  But that is not to be so.

The Origin

It may seem ironical but it would take the collective imaginative minds  brought up and honed somewhere not entirely local to come up with a “Filipinized” running event with the goal of bringing the “FUN” back into the fun run.  They were composed of Chris Everingham and Andrew Wolff of the popular Philippine Volcanoes team and actor Jon Avila who grew up in the “Land Down Under” (Chris) and England (Andrew and Jon).  Add to this very masculine team is the very petite, dusky and charming Sheena Vera Cruz of the Amazing Race Philippines fame who herself grew up in the states but managed to make the land of her parents as her own.  Bringing with her the burning desire to make Pinoys proud through excellence in hip hop dancing, she, with several friends, founded the Philippine All-Stars.

At the press conference with the Amazing Pinoy ambassadors themselves!

 The Concept

The brain-child of this “international” Pinoy team is AMAZING PINOY Fun Run 2013.  Lifting from the press release, “Amazing Pinoy Run revs up the ante of how fun runs should be. Runners of all capabilities will certainly find the right challenge and excitement for them as the race is designed to suit a broad spectrum of runners, from newbies to the competitive. Picture a fun run with the challenges of the Amazing Race and a festive atmosphere of fun races and you get Amazing Pinoy Run! Event distances are 2K, 5K, and 10K.”  This I believe will reignite the prevalence of “fun” runners once again who after all are the future of the running scene in our country.

The Unique Features

During the press conference held last March 19 at the Fitness And Athletics showroom at BHS, Sir Edward Kho, the Race Director, promised that the inclusion of several Pinoy themed obstacles along the way like Tinikling bamboo, Limbo rock, mazes, lunge walk areas, etc. will make the race more fun and interactive.  Not to mention the presence of almost all of the Volcanoes (the reason for picking up April 27 being between 2 major games) who will do several exciting and fun games.  Something to look forward to is the Volcanoes vs. Azkals 3-on-3 competition where once and for all will settle the nagging question as to who is really the best team.  Many fans of both national teams will very much like to see this brewing clash of the titans!

The Good Cause

It would be noteworthy that despite the seeming superficial gloss of having celebrity endorsers, part of the proceeds from the registration fees will go to the two beneficiaries of the race event – Clark Foundation and the Filipino Children Needy Fund.
